This year I took the big leap to study full-time Honours in Ecology at UNE, and while I am loving every minute of it, my brain is too full of measuring pasture groundcover and landscape function to make space for anything else. What if farmers were paid to adopt farming methods that ensured that the carbon that is causing trouble in our atmosphere was sequestered in their soils? This tantalising possibility is explored in Lucas Ihlein's collaborative project with Allan Yeomans called 'Baking Earth: Soil and the Carbon Economy', which is currently part of an exhibition in Melbourne.
Kim and Lucas have been very busy working with collaborators in Mackay on a project that reimagines the relationship between sugarcane farming and The Reef, and has sunflowers at its heart. Kim’s penned some songs, Lucas has written some reflections and there’s a lovely video of a planting event last year too.
